What is Janma Nakshatra?

Janma Nakshatra, often called the birth star, is the Nakshatra occupied by the Moon at the time of birth in the sidereal zodiac. In traditional Vedic astrology, it is one of the reference points used when interpreting a Janma Kundali.

The zodiac is divided into 27 Nakshatras. Each covers 13°20′, and each Nakshatra is further divided into four Padas of 3°20′ each. Your birth time matters because the Moon moves continuously through these divisions.

How does the Birth Star Calculator work?

  1. Convert local birth time to UTC. The selected time zone is used to interpret the date and time you entered.
  2. Calculate the Moon's position. An astronomical ephemeris estimates the Moon's geocentric ecliptic longitude for that moment.
  3. Apply the sidereal offset. The calculator subtracts an approximate Lahiri ayanamsa to obtain a sidereal longitude.
  4. Identify Nakshatra, Pada and Rashi. The longitude is mapped to the corresponding 27 Nakshatra divisions, four Padas and 12 Rashis.

The birthplace name is collected for your reference; the selected time zone is what converts local birth time to UTC. The Moon's geocentric longitude itself does not require latitude and longitude of the birthplace.

Why is your Nakshatra used in traditional astrology?

Kundali interpretation

Janma Nakshatra is considered alongside Rashi, planetary placements and other chart factors in traditional horoscope interpretation.

Naming traditions

Some Namkaran traditions use the Nakshatra Pada to identify suggested starting sounds for a baby's name.

Marriage matching

Nakshatra is one of the factors used in traditional Ashtakoota or Guna Milan compatibility assessments.

Vimshottari Dasha

The birth Nakshatra is used to determine the starting planetary period in the traditional Vimshottari Dasha system.

Rashi and Nakshatra: what is the difference?

Rashi and Nakshatra both describe divisions of the zodiac, but they use different-sized sections. A Rashi is 30° wide, while a Nakshatra is 13°20′ wide. The Moon's sidereal longitude determines both the Moon sign and the birth Nakshatra.

Frequently asked questions

How can I find my birth star?

Enter your date of birth, exact local birth time and the time zone that applied at your birthplace. The calculator estimates the Moon's sidereal position and maps it to a Nakshatra.

Is Janma Nakshatra the same as Moon sign?

No. The Moon sign (Rashi) is one of 12 zodiac signs. Janma Nakshatra is one of 27 lunar divisions. Both are determined from the Moon's position.

How many Nakshatras are there?

The commonly used system has 27 Nakshatras, each divided into four Padas, making 108 Padas in total.

Can two people have the same Nakshatra?

Yes. Many people can share a Janma Nakshatra. Their complete birth charts can still differ because of birth time and other planetary positions.

Does the exact birth time matter?

Yes. The Moon moves through the zodiac, and a birth close to a Nakshatra or Pada boundary may produce a different result if the recorded time is inaccurate.

Why do different astrology websites show different results?

Results can vary because of differences in ephemeris, ayanamsa, time-zone handling, daylight-saving rules or rounding. This page uses a simplified Lahiri-style approximation and should be checked against a trusted Panchang for boundary cases.

What if I do not know my birth time?

Check family records or official documents if possible. Without a reliable time, a result near a Nakshatra boundary may be uncertain.
